Your predominant nervous system pattern: Collapse and/or Dissociation
Your core survival strategy: Endure, give, conserve what's left
Your likely mind-body symptoms:
What you read below may sound like what you think of as your personality, but it’s not. You are about to explore the possibility that what seems like your identity is actually a pattern ingrained into your nervous system from childhood in order to help you feel ok, to keep you connected and to keep you going.
You open your eyes and there's something there. A small reserve. A faint pulse of life. You read a message and it doesn't feel like a wall. You see food and your body says yes, not too much. You think of someone you love and you don't have to love them from across a canyon. You're here. In a body. In your life.
The lights are coming back on. Slowly. Gently. At a pace your system can handle.
This is what changes when the Collapse and/or Dissociation pattern releases. This changes when your nervous system is finally given the conditions it needs to come back online.
Basic things like texts, food, errands, and making decisions feel like more than you have to give. You forget to eat. Sleep is never restorative. When a flare hits, you stop, lie down, go dark sometimes for hours, sometimes for days.
The Burned-Out Giver pattern usually begins as protection. Things were really hard - even if you don’t remember it that way. You endured. You gave. You held things together. You needed less. You kept going past what your body had to give. Eventually your nervous system did the only thing it could. It started to shut you down to keep you alive - like a form of living hibernation.
The problem is physiological. A nervous system in collapse and/or dissociation is conserving everything because it has been overwhelmed for too long. This isn't laziness. It isn't a weakness. It isn't depression in the way people use that word. It's your body, after years of giving, going into the deepest protective state it has. Shutdown isn't a failure. It's the most ancient form of survival.
And that's also why most things you've tried haven't worked. They were built for a system with more capacity than you currently have.
Look at the loop. This is why pushing makes it worse. Every time you try to force your way through, your nervous system pulls deeper into shutdown to protect you. Every “I should be doing more” deepens the collapse. The way out isn't more effort. More effort is the loop.
This is also why so many programs and protocols haven't worked. They ask for capacity you don't have. They start at a level your nervous system can't meet. They tell you to do practices that someone in fight or flight could handle but that, for you, take more than you've got to give.
The way out is meeting your system exactly where it is, and rebuilding from there.
Your nervous system needs to learn that coming back online does not mean being overwhelmed again. It learns this through small, paced, repeated experiences that help your body build capacity without shutting down.
This is what nervous system retraining does when it’s done at a pace your system can actually handle. It gives your brain and body small, repeated signals of safety, with enough space between them for your system to integrate, so capacity can start building without pushing you deeper into shutdown.
When this starts to shift, your body can finally access the states it needs for real repair. Energy returns. Basic things start to feel less impossible. The fog thins. You start to be able to feel yourself again, in a body that's no longer just trying to survive.
This is not something you’re consciously choosing. It is an automatic protection response your nervous system learned. And once you can become aware of it and feel where it begins, you can start retraining it at the root.
That's where nervous system regulation work can help transform your health and life.
I was bedbound for over a year. Lights, sounds, food, conversations, all of it was too much. My body had given everything it had, for a long time, and finally it just couldn't anymore.
My life changed when I stopped trying to force my body to keep going and started working directly, gently, at the pace it could actually handle.
HEAL is the program Karden and I built specifically for nervous systems that have been overwhelmed for too long. Everything inside it is paced for what your system can actually receive. No pushing. No “just do this.” Real, structured retraining at a pace that meets you where you are.
Inside HEAL, you'll learn how to retrain your nervous system, rebuild capacity in small steady ways, and rewire the patterns that have kept you stuck in collapse.
Now that you can see the pattern, you can begin to change it.
Start changing the pattern that's been keeping you stuck in The Nervous System Recovery Membership.
Warmly,
Jen
